Day 287- Jessica, 24, Edinburgh

I currently work at Scottish Student Sport, the organisation which advocates, develops and provides sporting opportunities for students in Scotland. I am the Competitions Coordinator and organise the logisitics for our 300+ events programme across 33 sports.

Which young Scot inspires you?
I am constantly inspired by the athlete, Laura Muir, as she has managed to maintain a solid education (now a fully trained veterinarian) alongside improving her performance on a global stage!

What is the best thing about growing up in Scotland?
For me, the best thing about growing up in Scotland is the access to the countryside and nature. Scotland is a truly beautiful country and we get to enjoy it every day!

What would you most like people from older generations to know about young people?
I would like older generations to know that a bit of responsibility and support can really help make a young person shine. Find us opportunities and we will do them to the best of our ability!

What is your biggest achievement to date?
My biggest achievement so far would be role I played in the IronKIDS event which ran alongside the Iron Man 70.3 Edinburgh this year (an opportunity I heard about through YOYP2018!). As the Event Manager I worked alongside a group of young people to coordinate activities around the event to make it a fun day out for everyone, then managed the logistics on the day to ensure the races ran smoothly and safely. I received positive feedback from a number of parents and overcame challenges I hadn’t yet faced. It was a fantastic opportunity!

What would you most like to achieve in the future?
I would like my career path to remain on the journey towards creating a fitter and happier Scotland. If I can make a difference to a few peoples’ lives to show them the benefits of making positive changes, I will consider myself successful!

What message would you like to give to other young people in Scotland?
I would like each and every young person to grasp opportunities to develop with two hands and give it everything they have. Volunteering and taking on responsibility of any kind teach you things that will be invaluable in all aspects of your life! If you manage to keep up some physical activity as part of that as well – you’ll be even happier!
