Day 239- Niamh, 21, Glasgow

I study at the University of Stirling; I am going into 4th year and study English.

What is the best thing about growing up in Scotland?
Respect for all, regardless of faith, sexuality etc. Free education made going to university possible for me. I come from a poor lower class background and now I’m studying to be a teacher. I also love the diversity of Scotland.

What would you most like people from older generations to know about young people?
Not all young parents are irresponsible or ‘get pregnant to claim benefits’. I grew up on a council estate and had a difficult upbringing but I left school to go on to work and study. I now live in my own house with a mortgage and claim no benefits. Stereotyping young parents is wrong.

What is your biggest achievement to date?
Passing my exams, getting my own house and having my little girl.

What would you most like to achieve in the future?
I want to graduate and get married.

What message would you like to give to other young people in Scotland?
Don’t let other people’s judgments and opinions stop you from following your dreams!
