Day 221- Rebecca, 24, Galashiels

I work at the Scottish Public Pension Agency (SPPA) in Tweedbank, Galashiels. The SPPA is an agency of the Scottish Government. In my spare time I am an ambassador for Scotland’s Year of Young People 2018 (#YoYP2018). So far this has been a fantastic experience and we have helped local organisations, the Scottish Government and others engage and work with young people across Scotland. I hope to do more volunteering with other organisations after the YoYP year is over.

Which young Scot inspires you?
It is impossible to choose one individual who inspires me the most! All of my family and friends inspire me in one way or another. They are all excellent role models for me and support me in everything I do.

What is the best thing about growing up in Scotland?
The best thing about growing up in Scotland is the Scottish Borders, where I live! It is a beautiful place with amazing countryside. I enjoy horse riding and walking, so I am lucky to have the hills and fields so nearby – it’s not the same in any other country!

What would you most like people from older generations to know about young people?
Young people are the future of everything – from business, to culture to education! Therefore, it is so important that the older generation engage with their young people (in their community, at work or at home). Young people always want to learn, and who better to teach them than their leaders, teachers or parents? The older generation can also learn a lot from their young people – they will not only learn about the latest technology, but they can also learn how to be more diverse and inspiring!

What is your biggest achievement to date?
My biggest achievement is overcoming barriers and proving to the people who told me “I can’t” that I can and I will! It’s not always easy to keep at something you want to do when other people are telling you not too, but if you are willing to work hard I always believe that it will pay off.

What would you most like to achieve in the future?
It’s simple – to live a happy and healthy life in a country where individuals are respected for who they are and talents are recognised!

What message would you like to give to other young people in Scotland?
Keep up the good work – keep working towards your goals, because you will get there! If you want something then go out and get it.
