Day 190- Edith, 24, Fort William

Edith is a volunteer ranger at the Nevis Landscape Partnership for three months, and also doing her John Muir Award, based in the Glen Nevis area.

Which young Scot inspires you?
Zeki Basan is a young man that I admire. From a young age, he discovered, explore, and learn some amazing skills to live in, and protect his local environment. He won the Scottish Youth Award for Excellence in Mountain Culture from the Fort William Mountain Festival.

What is the best thing about growing up in Scotland?
I lived in Scotland for 5 years now. I moved here from France to study and I love it. Living in the Scottish Highlands is exceptional and give me opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities such as climbing, walking and paddling sports. I feel lucky to be in a country where I feel that everything is possible.

What would you most like people from older generations to know about young people?
Probably that the young generation is the next one to make things change. What I mean by this is that if the older generations are not happy with something (e,g, environment issues) then, they should pass it on the young generation as we may be able to make a real change.

What is your biggest achievement to date?
Finishing my BA (hons) degree. It has been a challenge right at the start as it was in my second language. But I got help from many friends and lecturers, and got a 2.1 at the end of it! I feel proud of myself for this achievement and feel that I could achieve anything else, if I wanted to.

What would you most like to achieve in the future?
I would love to make a change in the tourism industry. I love the outdoors, our natural environment and everything that goes with it. However I do not like the path that is it taking at the moment, and would love to change it at least in the area where I live; Fort William.

What message would you like to give to other young people in Scotland?
Don’t be scare of starting a project or to have ideas. This could probably be the start of a career path, dream, holiday or passion. Whatever it is, follow it and enjoy it. I have realised many of my dreams, and there is not a better feeling that this one; feeling proud and happy.
